Making a home wheelchair-friendly: ramps, doors and bathrooms
What slope is safe, how wide a door must be for the chair to pass, and small bathroom changes that reduce falls.
Ramps
The commonly recommended slope is 1:12 — every 1 cm of height needs 12 cm of ramp length. Gentler slopes (1:16, 1:20) are easier for people self-propelling a manual chair. Use the Ramp length tool in the Tools section to get the figure for your doorstep.
Doors and passages
Measure the full width of the chair (including push rims) and compare it with the clear door opening. Leave margin on each side so hands do not hit the frame.
Bathroom
- Fit grab bars beside the toilet and shower area.
- Use a shower chair or commode chair with a backrest.
- Lay non-slip mats and remove door thresholds where possible.
Bedroom
A bed height close to the wheelchair seat height makes transfers easier and safer. For people who cannot transfer themselves, consider a transfer belt or patient lift.
Note
These figures are general guidance; for major alterations have a builder or engineer survey the site.
